El cultivo de arroz en Uruguay se basa en un sistema de producción integrado en rotaciones con pasturas y ganadería. Estas características lo distinguen
internacionalmente y le confieren la posibilidad de aprovechar estas ventajas comparativas y diferenciarse dentro de la región, pudiendo for talecer
simultáneamente la preservación de los recursos naturales.
En el contexto nacional actual, donde la expansión de la agricultura de secano se basa fundamentalmente en un modelo puramente agrícola, las
características anteriormente mencionadas del cultivo de arroz en Uruguay pasan a constituir un atributo diferenciable no sólo a nivel internacional sino también a nivel local. No es el objetivo de este ar tículo analizar las razones por las cuales mayoritariamente las áreas agrícolas del país han seguido ese camino, pero es claro que el área arrocera pasa a constituir uno de los últimos reductos donde la producción agrícola se basa en rotaciones con pasturas e integrada a la pecuaria. Sin embargo no poseemos una estrategia consolidada y definida de cómo capitalizar comercialmente estas ventajas. Son ventajas que están asociadas a generar un producto con las características asociadas de provenir de un sistema de relativa baja intensidad e impacto ambiental. |
